About the preacher – Jaine and I joined the staff of Cru Singapore in 1990. We came to Japan in 1994, where we have since served in campus ministry, as well as work with churches and organizations.  We developed outreach tools like the Christmas CD, World Cup related tools & the manga, ‘The Search’. We are now Japan Baptist Fellowship Mission Workers and will work with the Innovative Ministry Team. My family, including our daughters, Josephine (a student at Calvin College) and Angela (a student at CAJ), enjoy the simple things of life, and food like ramen, chocolate & nuts.  Â

A prayer reflection on (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, Luke 7:36-50 and John 12:1-8) where Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with perfume.
because
because
we have preserved our joy in manna jars for the long winter of despair,
storing them in the dark corners of our souls, we have forgotten its gritty taste;
because
we have put a tight lid on our joy, and put it in the back of the pantry,
we have forgotten how it can tickle our noses;
because
we are so busy prattling pious platitudes
about the poor, the least, the lost,
 we ignore your words which anoint the as your children;
because
we have put up the shutters and storm doors
to keep your future from sneaking in,
 we have missed the sweet breeze carrying your hope to us;
because
we are who we are, restore us, Holy Grace,
and make us a fragrant offering to the world.

Sermon texts – Matthew 26:6-13
The Anointing at Bethany – 6 Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8 But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.†10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.â€
