God Has Spoken by His Son

1:1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by [the] Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3 He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

2:5 Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. 6 But someone has testified somewhere,

“What are human beings that you are mindful of them,

   or mortals, that you care for them?

   7 You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;

   you have crowned them with glory and honor,

   8 subjecting all things under their feet.”

Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, 9 but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,

12 saying,

    “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,

     in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Sermon Text:

• Question: How many of you have ever experienced a moment where you just went, “Whoa… that’s amazing… and I feel really tiny?”

• Illustration: I can recall a couple of moments when I felt that way. Once, I was coming home from a conference near Mount Fuji. My friends and I were finishing up with the audio and video side of the production and decided to stop by an onsen. After showering, we went outside to the 露天風呂 (open-air bath), and as soon as we did, we looked up, and whoa… there was Mount Fuji right in front of us. Not like the small depiction that we see in a 銭湯 (public bath). This was the real thing, its peak high into the sky. That was an incredible moment, and did I seem really small! Another one was when I was out in Miyakojima, which is one of the smaller islands in the Okinawa region. It was night, and I was stepping outside for a moment when I happened to just look up at the sky. I grew up in a somewhat suburban part of the southeastern United States, and so we did get to see some stars, but that night in Okinawa, it was totally different. Since we didn’t have many street lights, when I looked up, I was awash in a vast blanket of what was probably a couple hundred stars visible to the naked eye. Whoa… did I feel small! God truly made this incredible world, and yet we are just a teeny tiny part of this vast universe.

• Facts: Did you know that just in our galaxy alone, there is an estimated minimum of 100 billion stars in the Milky Way? Some scientists estimate up to 400 billion stars just in our galaxy. There are untold numbers of these shiny objects. Don’t forget about the planets (and their satellites - their moons) on top of that, which is, again, an estimated minimum of 100 billion planets. Yet we are the only known planet in this universe that sustains life, and we are truly blessed to experience so much where we are.

• First Passage: The writer of today’s psalm really hones in on the irony of how God deeply loves us in light of these facts. This incredible God, who has the ability to create all that we see (and beyond… things that we can’t see without the use of scientific tools), has made such beautiful things and placed them in ways for us to see, delight, and be amazed. The “whoa” moments that we see from what God has done leads us to praise the One who made it all. The psalmist says that God’s name is majestic in all the earth because of how incredible He is.

• Truth: What is incredible, though, is not only did God create us humans but that we were made in a way that is different from anything else in this world. When we look at Genesis 1, we are told that we were made in the image of God. No other creature, no other object in existence, nothing else bears the image of God in the way we humans do. We were made, as the psalmist says, “a little lower than the angels”. This word, angels, is actually a bit ambiguous. The Hebrew word actually can be interpreted in a few ways, such as God, gods (divine beings), or heavenly beings. But in the end what it means is we were created in a special way.

• Translation: You matter because God says you matter. You’re loved because God loves you. God CHOSE to love YOU. That’s what we see here. You could be just like a little ant in a park and really not be known, but God sees you and knows you.

• Point: The point is that while we aren’t God, we were given “glory and honor” and have the responsibility to have dominion over what God has created. That’s the work that Adam and Eve were given when they were first put in the Garden of Eden. Ultimately, through our work and through our worship, we are to bring glory and honor to God. This was to be in perfect harmony, a beautiful peace we call shalom.

• Reality: But we know that it doesn’t always work that way. This world certainly does not work that way right now. Earthquakes, storms, floods. Wars, terrorism, killing. There are other things that you might also know that shows that our world is broken. We see the fall of the world and its beautiful shalom throughout nature and in the human heart. We know that our lives are not perfect. Some things were done to us and many things we did ourselves. Don’t you just wish we could fix it? But as much as we strive and try to do better, we will always fall again.

• Second Passage: Our second passage from Hebrews connects well in this discussion. We don’t know who wrote this book, but we know that it is addressed to those who are familiar with the promises and history of the people of Israel, and we see the connection made between those promises and the One who fulfills those promises - Jesus Christ. The first few verses provide an opportunity to see God’s revelation unfolding.

• During the Old Testament, God revealed His will through prophets, but now, God spoke to us through Jesus Christ, the Son. We knew there was a promise of the Messiah - the Chosen One - throughout the Old Testament, but now, we know who that Messiah is - Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

• Jesus Christ was not just a messenger but the actual Creator and heir of all things. He was different from all of the prophets who came before Him because He is the very God who made all things and is to rule over all things.

• Jesus Christ is the perfect reflection of God’s glory and the exact image or imprint of God. Jesus, the Son of God, is God, and therefore, there is nothing that can reflect the glory of God quite like Jesus Himself.

• Jesus, as God, sustains us through His Word, and through His sacrifice as the perfect God man, He purifies us from our sins. Jesus did not come only to show and reveal God but to resolve our barriers of sins that prevent us from being with God. Jesus, God in flesh, is the God of love displayed to us in person. Because of Jesus, we can once again have peace with God.

• Jesus, now, after suffering, dying, and rising again, sits at the right hand of the Father in Heaven, first and foremost ahead of all that exists. The sacrifice of Christ provided the perfect solution to the barrier caused by our sins, and the One who gave Himself up for us is worthy of all honor and power and glory, and He is to rule over all things.

• Big Picture: We have this whole picture that we should step back and take a look. God made this gigantic universe. We’re a really tiny part of it. And for some reason, God created Earth and put on it all sorts of incredible living creatures, with humans made in His image. And yet, when humans fell in sin, God didn’t just bury Earth and move on to something else. He didn’t push the reset button. Instead, God worked to redeem, to restore, to resolve. The God of this whole universe chose instead to come to earth, to demonstrate love, and to show the way back to God.

• Illustration: I am a bit of a nerd if you haven’t been able to tell. I like to build things, particularly computers. I’ve ordered parts and put together systems that are being used in professional settings. Yet another thing I like to do is to take what isn’t working as well or isn’t operating and trying to fix them. Maybe part of the reason is because I grew up living in a house where we repaired things as much as we could before it wasn’t repairable anymore. My dad would fix our family car as much as he could rather than send it into the shop. My mom would make our clothes last as long as possible and find ways to use them in other ways - like an old dress would serve as new upholstery for our dinner chairs. We live in a day and age where we could just toss things out and buy new things. It seems less “efficient” to spend the time to fix things. Yet I found that when I take the time to pull a computer apart, see what needs to be done, and then put it back together again, it tells me a story. The computer isn’t just an object. It is a tool that has a history, and I find that working with computers that were once not working and finding ways to make them work again is a rewarding experience. This process of reworking the devices says a lot about me as a nerd and as a technician.

• Redeeming God: The process of Jesus coming to this world to show us the way and restore us to Himself says a lot about who He is. The story of God’s work in the lives of His people says so much about His love, His care, and His sovereignty. God says you matter - and God proves that through what He has done.

• Second Passage Continued: When we return to our reading in Hebrews beginning with 2:5, the writer pulls in a quotation of Psalm 8. Why do human beings matter so much to God? We were made a little lower than the angels (which this writer has chosen to use here), and yet we are “crowned with glory and honor”. • YET: There’s more to this story. Because of Jesus, we are saved, and we are sanctified. We are set apart and are being transformed into Christ’s image each and every day. What is the result of this? We have one Father. We are all one family. And here’s the Good News - Jesus calls us brothers and sisters. Think about that - first, we as human beings are these tiny little creatures in this vast universe, and yet, we are crowned with glory and honor. Then we see what happens next after that - in Jesus Christ, we are saved and redeemed, and we are His sisters and brothers. You are brought into this family and have direct access to the God of the universe. Isn’t that incredible? That means we, not just at West Tokyo Union Church, but we as the body of Christ all around the world, are brought together as one in Jesus Christ. You belong, and you are loved. This is all made possible by the body and blood of Jesus.

• Today: We are gathered today on World Communion Sunday, which is a tradition that started a little over 90 years ago in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. This practice took some time to gather steam, but during World War II, the observation of World Communion Sunday quickly spread among several denominations and is observed by large parts of the Church in the United States, particularly those who are a part of the National Council of Churches. Every first Sunday of October, we observe this to remember how the body of Christ is not just a localized thing and that communion is not just something the local congregation observes. The body of Christ from South to North, from West to East, and all in between, recognizes Jesus as the Head of the Church, and through His suffering and sacrificial death, we are brought to life through His work. Therefore, we are to remember that the members of the body of Christ are all around the world, and when we observe World Communion Sunday, we are to remember how we are united as one body, sisters and brothers in Christ. We most certainly will see a diversity in how people worship, in the languages that are used, in the songs that we sing, but we are rooted in Jesus Christ, and the hope of salvation found in Him unites us all together. What is interesting is that while even thinking about the church all around the world, we might as individuals feel pretty tiny, and yet, Christ personally calls you to His table. As we say during communion, this table is not the table of West Tokyo Union Church but the table of the Lord Jesus Christ, and those who have professed faith in Christ and are a member in good standing at some part of Christ’s church are welcome to partake in this meal today.

• Conclusion: I want us to take a moment today to reflect on what we heard. The God of this vast, gigantic universe created you and loved you so much that He Himself came so that our problem of sin could be fixed. Jesus says that you matter so much to Him that He gave His life for you. We know that God loves us because of what He has done. Now Jesus asks you to follow Him. He deeply loves you and calls you a sibling. The world might not always show you love, but Christ always will. To those who believe and follow Christ, you are welcome to partake in this special meal during the service, to be reminded that God loves you. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, and whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” May this beautiful solution that Christ the Son and Savior of the World has provided to us give us hope and grace to live in peace with God and one another. Amen.
