Jim teaches pastoral theology at the Japan Lutheran College and the Japan Lutheran Theological Seminary. He is the campus Director of the Personal Growth and Counseling Center. Together with his spouse, Carol, he began global mission service in 1982, immediately following his graduation from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., where he also received his PhD.

Hikari is an ordained pastor of the United Methodist Church and a member of the New York Annual Conference.  As a pastor, she served 5 local churches in New England and New York for the past 14 years until she received a new appointment as a regional missionary of the United Methodist Women in 2012. She currently serves as a Representative Director of the Wesley Foundation in Tokyo, Japan, which ministry focuses on welfare and empowerment among women, youth, and children.
