“A Sign for You” — WTUC Christmas 2022 Service

Celebrate Christmas with West Tokyo Union Church at our IN-PERSON and online hybrid worship service this Sunday, December 25!

James Sack is an ordained missionary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and works through the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church (JELC). He and his wife Carol came to Japan as long-term missionaries starting in 1982. Jim now teaches in the areas of counseling and Christian Anthropology in the undergraduate school, Clinical Psychology at the Graduate School, and Pastoral Care and Counseling for the Lutheran Seminary. He also has served as a chaplain at Fuchu Prison over 10 years.

A Great Light Shining in the Darkness of 2022– Fourth Sunday of Advent – December 18, 2022 at 10am JST

  • Rev. Prof. Paul Shew is the Vice-Chancellor of Aoyama Gakuin where he is also a professor and university chaplain.
  • Rev. Shew, an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, a Masters of Divinity from Harvard University Divinity School, and a B.A. in Japanese Studies from Earlham College. With a background in cultural studies, comparative religion and Church history, Dr. Shew has focused much of his recent research on Christian higher education in Asia. As Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Shew has special responsibility for leading the international strategy and initiatives for Aoyama Gakuin schools.
  • Dr. Rev. Shew has taught courses on Christianity, religion, ethics and education to over 18,000 students since joining Aoyama Gakuin, and his lectures have been viewed by many more on YouTube since the pandemic. He has been deeply involved in founding and leading numerous student organizations and programs including Shanti Shanti (international service-learning partnering with Habitat for Humanity), the Contemporary Worship Team and the University Gospel Choir. He is Vice-Director of the AG Historical Research Institute and a researcher in the Institute for Technological & Social Transformation. He also serves on the board of directors of several universities as well as other civic and social organizations.  
  • Dr. Rev. Shew is married to Mari and they have three sons (two in USA) and a dog. Rev. Shew enjoys spending time in the beautiful lake of Nojiri where they have a cabin.

God Knows– Third Sunday of Advent – December 11, 2022 at 10am JST

  • Guest Speaker — Bishop Dr. Hui-Ming Lau
  • Rev Dr. Lau graduated from Trinity Theological College (B.D.), Singapore in 1993 and later from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (D. Min), U.S.A. in 2007. Rev Lau had served as a District Superintendent and as a full-time ordained pastor at multiple Methodist churches in Malaysia since 1993. He is currently the Bishop of the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference of the Methodist Church in Malaysia. 
  • He and his wife, Hung-Hung Sia have two daughters (Linda & Joanne) and one son (Justin).

  • Rev Timothy Toh has served as a pastor in Malaysia for 5 years before being assigned by Methodist Mission Board of Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference to Kyoto as missionary in 2017. Currently he is serving in a Baptist church, and also at the TOMO Learning Centre, which includes an English library and English classroom. He and his wife Belle Ting have one daughter and one son.

No One Knows — First Sunday of Advent – November 27, 2022 at 10am JST

Join the West Tokyo Union Church community for our IN-PERSON and online hybrid worship service this Sunday! Rev. Dr. Jim Sack will be preaching on the second coming on this first Sunday in Advent. Jesus reminds us, in Matthew 24, that no one knows when the Lord will come again to the earth; “no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

This will be our first in-person service in a long while, so we hope that you can join us on the campus of the Lutheran Seminary or online. We will have a Thanksgiving potluck at Ann’s house after the service. (Details below.) Thank you to Kazuko for playing the organ every Sunday. We appreciate your musical gifts. The Essential Things, Part II — 24th Sunday after Pentecost – November 20, 2022 at 10am JST

  • Ms. Judith Tan
  • Judith is a Sarawakian from Sarawak located on Borneo Island (Sarawak is the biggest state of Malaysia). In 1988, Judith graduated with Bachelor of Applied Science in Pharmacology and Biochemistry from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. In year 1998, Judith furthered her studies at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and obtained her Bachelor degree of Pharmacy in 2000. Since 2001, she has founded a group of pharma-related companies in retail, wholesale, as well as warehouse service providers in Sarawak. In 2012, Judith also received a Master of Christian Studies (M.Sc) through Theological Education by Extension (TEE) from Seminary Theology Malaysia. 
  • Judith had served in various ministries in Trinity Methodist Church, Kuching.  It was in the local missions to the indigenous communities among the urban poor that led her into her most current role. This role involves agro-related plant processing which builds and establishes a link in the supply chain between the indigenous farmer community and the consumer market. Currently, Judith is also an appointed local preacher of Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference.
