Sunday, September 29th

We have the privilege of welcoming Paul Nethercott to our congregation this week!  He will bring a message on “What Question Are You Asking?”  from Psalm 91.  During the service will be Sunday School for the 1-5 year olds.  A yummy Fellowship Hour will follow the service with a time for all of us to reconnect and refresh!

A little about Paul …….. Canadian by birth, I have lived in Japan for over twenty five years. I’m a missionary filmmaker with a vision to make highly entertaining films that touch a lot of lives. Films that impact the nation of Japan, engaging it culturally and spiritually. I live in Tokyo with a wonderful wife (Nancy) and a very special teenage daughter. I enjoy people, good food, travel, and movies. When the huge earthquake hit Japan in March of 2011, I knew I wanted to help. Within three days I began PR work for Tokyo based CRASH Japan — a Tokyo based disaster relief organization. I was responsible for fundraising and producing pretty much all of CRASH Japan’s media. It was an awesome opportunity to meet a lot of great people and be involved in raising upwards of 8 million dollars worth of aid and helping to mobilize over 3,000 volunteers. While on a trip to the disaster zone for CRASH I met and interviewed two former Yakuza who were doing volunteer work with a local church. These two men made a BIG impression on me and on the rest of the crew. Meeting them and hearing their inspired us to make a film. Here is what 2 Criminals director Matthew Burns wrote about me: “Paul’s work has steadily been gaining attention at home and overseas. Winning Best Of Fest at the BEA Festival of Media Arts, Jitensha (“Bicycle”) has notched up nearly a dozen other accolades. His recent release, Persimmon, also won a number of awards, and the four camera shoot of the groundbreaking Wadaiko X “Black Gospel” music video was remarkable in its ambition and scale – featuring over 300 live musicians.

We have the privilege of welcoming Stephen Bay to our congregation this week!  He will bring a message on forgiveness from Matthew 18.  Adult Sunday School will be held in the Upper Room from 9:30am on the Parable of the Yeast.  During the service will be Sunday School for the 1-5 year olds.  A yummy Fellowship Hour will follow the service with a time for all of us to reconnect and refresh!  Starting at 2pm will be the HS Youth Group meeting at the Harbaugh/Norris home.

Stephen and his wife, Soo, are missionaries with the Evangelical Covenant Church, having recently arrived in Japan from California, USA.  Soo originally hails from Seoul, South Korea, while Stephen was born in Ohio, USA to Chinese-Indonesian-Dutch-Jewish parents. They have two sons, Matthew (age 6) and Johann (age 3).  Before being called to Japan, Stephen served as the prayer ministry and volunteer care pastor at Newsong Community Church in Irvine, California, where he joined the staff in 2006.  Prior to that, he worked as a filmmaker and graphic artist, never imagining that God would one day call him to full-time ministry.  He is currently completing his studies at North Park Theological Seminary.  The Bay family will soon leave Tokyo to serve in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture.

PSALM 51 LITANY

Have mercy on us O God, with your unfailing love and great compassion blot out all our transgressions.

Wash away all our iniquities and cleanse us from our sin. For we are aware of our transgressions, the thoughts of those things that stand between us and the God who loves us are always on our minds.

When it comes right down to it we realize that it is against God, and God only that we have sinned and done that which is shameful in the sight of God.

Should the Lord judge us, that judgment would be justified.  I have been full of myself and not God from the beginning, perhaps even before I was born.

The Lord desires that truth would be an intimate part of who we are and the basis for teaching us wisdom that would guide our every move.

Cleanse us O Lord with your gracious good will, wash us with your grace and we will be clean.  Let us hear once again of your joy and gladness.

Hide your face from all our sins O Lord and blot out all our iniquities.

Create in us a pure heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

Deuteronomy 30: 15-20

Now listen!  Today I am giving you a choice between life and death,
between prosperity and disaster.

For I command you this day to love the Lord your God
and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations
by walking in his ways.

If you do this, you will live and multiply,
and the Lord your God will bless you
and the land you are about to enter and occupy.

But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen,
and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods,
then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed.

You will not live a long, good life
in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.

Today I have given you the choice between life
and death, between blessings and curses.

Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make.
Oh, that you would choose life,
so that you and your descendants might live!

You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God,
obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him.
This is the key to your life.

And if you love and obey the Lord,
you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
